Abstract

Objectives. The COVID-19 crisis has fundamentally changed our daily life. Being a new viral disease affecting humans for the first time, vaccines are not yet available. This virus is spreading exponentially, depending on region. The aim of the study is to estimate the chemical impact associated with COVID-19 and its prevention or mitigation measures.

Materials and methods. The study of specialized bibliographic sources from different databases was performed.

Results and discussion. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. In this context, the emphasis is on taking precautions, such as extensive hygiene protocol (e.g., regularly washing of hands, avoidance of face to face interaction, etc.), social distancing, and wearing of masks. Hand hygiene is an important part of the response to the international emergence of COVID-19. Practicing hand hygiene, which includes the use of alcohol-based hand rub or handwashing, is a simple, yet effective, way to prevent the spread of pathogens and infections. Frequent, and widespread, use of disinfectants leads to chemical exposure of the population. Disinfectants are dangerous substances and can be toxic if ingested. Even external exposure can be dangerous to the skin, eyes and respiratory system.

Conclusion. Frequent and widespread use of disinfectants leads to the population chemical exposure. Inappropriate and unsafe use can lead to toxic effects in people. The main types of disinfectants are discussed in this article. Only approved biocidal products may be used. Practicing recommendations for the correct use of these chemical products, guarantees the public health and health care workers protection.
