Objectives. The purpose of the article was to analyze data from existing literature sources on the complications of the Meckel diverticulum.
Material and methods. A number of scientific publications have been studied that present information on the epidemiology, anatomy of the Meckel's diverticulum, its complications, including the rare ones, the tactical treatment of complicated and uncomplicated Meckel's diverticulum. International data bases have been used such as online sources Google Scholar and PubMed. Keywords used in the search were: "Meckel diverticulum", "complication of Meckel’s diverticulum", "treatment of Meckel’s diverticulum".
Results. 30 scientific publications show current information on surgical treatment tactics of complicated and uncomplicated Meckel's diverticulum.
Conclusions. Meckel's diverticulum is clinically manifested in children by gastrointestinal bleeding, and in adults by clinical signs of inflammation or intestinal obstruction. If certain morphological changes persist in the inflamed appendix, but absent inside Meckel's diverticulum discovered incidentally, the Meckel's diverticulum should not be removed. If the morphological changes in the inflamed vermicular appendix raise doubts, the incidental detected Meckel's diverticulum must be removed. The volume of surgical treatment of Meckel's diverticulum is directly related to the anatomical features and pathophysiological changes of Meckel's diverticulum: diverticulectomy is indicated when there is a narrow base of the diverticulum, and is performed similarly to appendicectomy; the resection in the wedge will be performed in the case of the broad base of the diverticulum and in the absence of the ectopic gastric mucosa in this area; resection of the ileum in a block with the diverticulum will be performed in cases of ectopy of the mucosa at the base of the Meckel's diverticulum or passage of the ectopy area on the ileum mucosa.
