Objectives. Analysis of the impact of domestic violence on the physical and mental health of victims, as well as assessment of the social and economic impact of this phenomenon on the community, in order to improve institutional responses and victim protection.
Material and methods. The study reviewed the literature on the impact of domestic violence, using sources from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, to highlight the consequences on physical, mental, and social health, as well as the impact on society.
Results. Domestic violence is a complex and harmful phenomenon with a profound impact on victims and society, with significant physical, psychological and social implications. Studies show that it causes physical injuries, mental disorders, depression and anxiety, and victims are vulnerable to suicide and substance abuse. Domestic violence is the leading cause of femicide, often escalating into severe acts of abuse, with the majority of women being killed by their partners or family members. Additionally, domestic violence carries a significant economic burden, resulting in substantial costs for healthcare, justice, and social services, along with indirect costs such as lost productivity and increased crime rates.
Conclusions. Domestic violence is a major public health issue with a significant impact on victims and society as a whole, affecting both physical and mental health. The healthcare sector plays a crucial role in identifying, treating, and referring victims, protecting fundamental rights and promoting social well-being.
