Abstract

Objectives. Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a plant used as food and in medical needs due to its composition rich in nutrients and biologically active substances. The article discusses experimental and in vivo studies on the properties of various sea buckthorn products.

The aim of this paper was to systematize and analyze data from the modern scientific literature on the study of biologic, therapeutic and prophylactic effects of sea buckthorn on the nutritional status and use of sea buckthorn products in gastrointestinal and liver pathology.

Material and methods. For this review, a literature review was conducted by systematically searching for studies on this topic in the PubMed scientific base.

Results. Studies show the beneficial effect of sea buckthorn extract as well on a serum cholesterol levels by improving the activity of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, reducing the accumulation of lipids in the liver parenchyma and existing steatosis, hepatoprotective and antioxidant actions, as the inhibitory effect on the activation of liver stellate cells. The in vitro antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Hippophae salicifolia leaves in diabetic rats is of special interest. Sea buckthorn leaves (H. Salicifolia) have been shown to be rich in antioxidants with action on free radicals in conditions of hyperglycemia.

Conclusion. In this context, the composition of sea buckthorn fruit is unique and needs to be studied in different specialties, in special in gastroenterology, in the matter of a local produce.
